What is Melatonin and why is it not in Receptra’s CBD Gummies for Sleep?
Jan 27, 2022
Melatonin is a hormone found in the body, but melatonin used as a sleep aid is usually made synthetically in a laboratory.
It is most commonly available in pill form, but melatonin is also available in other forms such as melatonin gummies. The Receptra Team chose not to add melatonin to our Serious Rest CBD Gummies for Sleep and we believe we owe it to you, our customers, to give you some insight as to why. Here is a little information about melatonin and CBD for sleep, so that you can make your own educated decisions about what is right for your body.
How does Melatonin work for Sleep?
Melatonin is synthesized mainly by the pineal gland located in the brain and is naturally released in response to darkness and is suppressed by light. This is a hormone that is already present in your body. The increased levels of melatonin in the blood send signals to the brain to become less alert and you feel sleepy.
Melatonin secretion peaks in the middle of the night and decreases gradually during the second half of the night. Close to 80 percent of melatonin is synthesized at night. The production and secretion of melatonin start to go down in response to the sunlight.
How CBD works for Sleep?
Everyone has a natural endocannabinoid system (ECS) that serves the purpose of restoring and maintaining homeostasis (balance) in the body. CBD may impact the sleep cycle directly because there are endocannabinoid receptors in the brain that interact with it. In doing so, this interaction can help to regulate the body’s sleep cycle. But what’s interesting about using CBD is that it doesn’t seem to cause sleepiness when it is taken in the middle of the day. People often find that CBD helps to increase their alertness during the daytime hours and helps them calm down and prepare to sleep at night.
The National Sleep Foundation reports that 21% of Americans experience chronic discomfort every day. Another 36% of people report having acute aches and pains within the last week. That means there are a lot of people who may find it difficult to get comfortable when they go to sleep at night and that could be a factor that keeps them awake.
CBD is a natural antioxidant which gives it the ability to reduce inflammation. Taking CBD regularly may result in fewer aches and pains, and in turn, better quality sleep at night. People also may find that they’re able to stay in bed longer without feeling so uncomfortable that they need to get up. The World Health Organization has reported that CBD shows no addictive potential and does not have any substantial side effects.
Could you overdose on Melatonin?
It is safe to take melatonin supplements for the short term. Very little information is available about its long-term safety.
Taking just the recommended dose of melatonin may increase your blood melatonin levels up to 20 times more than normal and give you side effects that include:
- - Excessive sleepiness
- - Headache
- - Dizziness
- - Fatigue
- - Irritability
- - Stomach discomfort
- - Anxiety
- - Depression
Melatonin is not recommended for people with serious sleep conditions such as insomnia which should be treated under the guidance of a licensed physician. Melatonin may worsen restless leg syndrome because it lowers the amount of dopamine in the brain. Melatonin is also not recommended for those with dementia because it can cause an over-tired sensation and according to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, it may increase the risk of falling.
Why choose Receptra CBD gummies for Sleep instead of Melatonin Sleep Aids?
All Receptra Naturals products are third-party tested to ensure accuracy and provide transparency for our consumers. In 2020, Receptra was ranked number one by Leafreport for the most accurate CBD testing results. This means that what the label says is actually what is in the product. Receptra CBD gummies for sleep also include the added benefits of CBN which is another one of the over 100 cannabinoids found in the hemp plant. Melatonin supplements are synthetic.
A 2017 study published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine analyzed 31 melatonin supplements and found that the amount of melatonin they contained often varied wildly from what was listed on the label. The hormone serotonin was also detected in 26% of the samples analyzed. This could be potentially harmful for some people, particularly those who are taking antidepressants that increase serotonin levels in the brain. Combining medication or supplements that jointly boost serotonin can cause a serious condition called serotonin syndrome, which can result in shivering, diarrhea, muscle stiffness, fever or seizures.
Which foods contain melatonin?
Receptra recommends naturally increasing your melatonin if you are set on adding additional melatonin in your bloodstream before bed. Certain foods and liquids do contain melatonin and are not synthetic. These include:
- - Strawberries
- - Cherries
- - Oranges
- - Tomatoes
- - Walnuts
- - Almonds
- - Olives
- - Rice
- - Barley
- - Cow’s milk
- - Bananas
- - Pineapple
