Hemp Oil vs CBD Oil - What’s the difference?

Feb 08, 2022

Are hemp oil and CBD oil the same thing? The short answer is "no.”

Confusingly, the term ‘hemp oil’ is sometimes used both to refer to hemp-derived CBD oil EXTRACT and to hemp SEED oil. Here is the low down on the differences between them and the details to help you know what you are getting.

The differences between Hemp Seed Oil and CBD Oil

Hemp seed oil and CBD oil are both derived from the hemp plant, but not the same parts. CBD is extracted from the areal parts of the plant such as flowers and leaves. It can also come from stalks and stems in smaller amounts.

Hemp seed oil comes from just the seeds and no other parts of the plant, which means it does not have the same cannabinoid composition as CBD and has completely different benefits for the body. Hemp extract is a more common and accurate description of the raw oil used in high-quality CBD products.

Hemp Seed Oil

Hemp seed oil is commonly used in cooking or as an additive to foods, just as other cooking oils such as olive oil or avocado oil might be used. Hemp seed oil does not contain CBD but is still a healthy addition to most diets. Hemp seed oil is high in antioxidants, amino acids, and omega 3 fatty acids. It is also a great carrier oil to help ensure adequate delivery of CBD when taken in oil form.

Hemp Extract / CBD Oil

CBD is the abbreviation for the word “cannabidiol” and it is one of over 100 cannabinoids found in the hemp plant. CBD oil is known for its positive effects on both the body and mind through their interaction with the endocannabinoid system. The various other cannabinoids naturally produced by hemp plants also have unique and beneficial interactions with the body. Many of these are dependent on each other, as well as additional compounds found in hemp for efficient use by the body. The concept of these compounds working together is called the “entourage effect.” Hemp seed oil does not have these same interactions.

Receptra's full spectrum CBD oil is made from organic hemp grown in Colorado. CBD is also produced by marijuana plants, but these products often have different cannabinoid profiles and are likely illegal as they regularly contain more than the legal amount of 0.3% THC.

How to tell the difference when labels say “hemp oil”

Manufacturers that label products as “hemp oil” leave out a crucial piece of information. Some manufacturers purposefully blur this line to profit from unknowing consumers, while others use ambiguous language to avoid confrontation with the FDA or individual state regulations. It is important to know the difference because they are two very different products.

How to know you are getting CBD Oil

If you are looking for quality CBD oil and not hemp seed oil, these are some of the terms you should look for on the product label:

-Full Spectrum, Broad Spectrum or Isolate

-Hemp extract

-Hemp flower extract

-Cannabidiol

-CBD Oil

At least one of these terms should be present. Quality CBD will also state the milligrams of hemp extract in each dose or container. It should also have easily accessible third-party testing results and clear directions for use. You should also look for reliable CBD product reviews.
