National Sleep Awareness Month is the perfect time to take a serious look at your sleep habits and make the necessary changes to achieve better rest. Prioritizing sleep is a great way to improve overall health and wellbeing.

Proper rest impacts every aspect of your health, both mentally and physically, and can leave you unable to function. In fact, it’s no different than being drunk: even moderate sleep deprivation can impair your cognitive function and decision making ability to the same degree as alcohol impairment. According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, almost 20% of all car crash accidents and injuries are associated with sleepiness.

Sleep can also impact your immune system, which pretty important to keep in optimal condition, especially if you are traveling or have pre-existing health conditions. Weight gain can sometimes be attributed to a lack of sleep, as can higher rates of depression, forgetfulness, and grumpiness.

The National Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that adults receive at least seven hours of quality sleep every night. That isn't counting the hour you spent tossing and turning, re-tucking the kids into bed, or scrolling on Instagram after you turned the light off. Are you getting enough sleep?
