Celebrate National Self Improvement Month
Sep 05, 2021
September is National Self-Improvement Month and the perfect time for you to take a step back to evaluate yourself, find the areas you wish to improve and get motivated.
Not that you aren’t perfect just the way you are, but there is always room for improvement in anyone’s life. This time can serve almost like a second New Year’s Resolution as the summer ends and we start transitioning into the new season. What is it that you would like to work on and how can you make that happen? Here are some tips on little things you may be able to do to improve yourself sustainably in just one month.
Tips for National Self Improvement Month
Start a new fitness regimen
This does not mean you have to go join a gym or take up a new sport, although both of those things are great. Just stop putting off the things you already have been planning to do. Take a 15-minute walk every day, do some yoga once or twice a week, or find a free online class to try. A little movement can make a big difference in your day.
Get Better Sleep
There are countless benefits to getting an adequate amount of sleep. These include better mood, increased productivity, more focus, better control of your weight, not to mention less fatigue. There are a lot of natural solutions to achieving better rest. According to the National Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 35% of adults don’t get enough sleep. Sleep deprivation can be both dangerous and costly. It is estimated that 20% of all vehicle accidents involve sleep deprivation. A study performed by Rand Corporation states that lack of sleep in the workforce costs the United States over $411 billion annually.
Take Control of Your Finances
Sometimes finances can be one of those things we just ignore and hope for the best. When was the last time you actually took a look at how much you were paying in video streaming subscriptions or figured out if you could get a lower interest rate on that credit card? If you are in a position to evaluate your retirement savings, Self-Improvement Month is a great time to do so. Not only will you be improving an area of your life, but you will also be able to breathe a little easier understanding of what you are working with.
Quit a Bad Habit
We all have something we do that we probably shouldn’t. Do you stop for fast food on the way home from work most days? Maybe you leave your wet bath towel on the floor or wait too long do to the dishes. It could be something small like snacking in the middle of the night or something big like quitting tobacco or reducing alcohol consumption. Some bad habits may require help to truly kick, while others may just take a solid commitment. You will be better for it.
Reduce Stress
You know that is easier said than done. According to the American Institute of Stress, about 33 percent of people report feeling extreme stress. 77 percent of people experience stress that affects their physical health. 73 percent of people have stress that impacts their mental health. All stress is not created equal which means there is no one-size-fits-all approach, though there are a number of natural ways to reduce stress.
